5 easy ways to persuade others that you are trustworthy

5 easy ways to persuade others that you are trustworthy5 easy ways to persuade others that you are trustworthyThe FBI is under deserved scrutiny for its investigation into the 2016 election. In my time as an agent, we welcomed outside inquiries because its essential that investigators be non-partisan and non-biased. Lessons from ur history books remind us that the result is elendlage always morally acceptable when the few in power decide who should win, or lose, an election. The results may not be to our personal liking, but investigators must be perceived as trustworthy in their pursuit of the truth.Agents who worked criminal crimes had it easy because it was more of a just the facts approach to an investigation. Laws helped to establish clear lines of acceptable behavior. My work was in counterintelligence which relied on building trust. I was assigned the colossal sales job of persuading foreign spies to work for the U.S. government. Theres no possible reason why a foreign spy wou ld want to continue a conversation with me.It was essential that I created strong relationships built on trust, even when they knew I was an FBI agent. Especially when they knew, because they looked for deception and traps. As entrepreneurs, business owners, and sales people, youre in the saatkorn boat. You need to persuade others that youre trustworthy in an era of deceit and cynicism. Maybe what your potential customers hear about you isnt correct, or even fair, but that doesnt stop the rumors from flying around and your reputation can be at stake.Often the question is not whether people lie, its what are they lying about? Do they stretch their optimism and hope that business will turn around? Will they create a fabrication like Bernie Madoff? Does the CEO tell a half-truth or do they simply omit an important piece of information? Here are 5 easy ways to persuade others that you are trustworthy1. Start With Self-AwarenessOur greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the wor ld as being able to remake ourselves- GandhiRemember that people deceive themselves as much as they deceive others. They may be unaware of how others perceive them. People can deceive themselves and believe any number of things- sometimes they exaggerate their own importance or abilities to impress others. Sometimes theyre too critical of their own efforts. At other times, they dont give themselves enough credit for their accomplishments. The incredible thing about self-deception is that not only are we telling a lie, but were lying to ourselves We all have blind spots about our own performance. How To Make It Work For You Dont sabotage yourself and your best efforts to be seen as trustworthy to others by a lack of self-awareness. Work to understand your emotions- what you feel and what triggered it- so you can choose whether your response is productive and effective.Mental toughnessis the ability to manage your emotions, thoughts, and behavior in ways that set you up for success.2. K eep Your WordAs simple as this sounds, its one of the most important steps in building a foundation of trust. Do what you say and say what you do. When you cancel an appointment or fail to follow through, it creates fractures in your trustworthiness. It might not seem like a big deal to you, but repeated failures to keep your word add up over time. People will perceive you as less trustworthy so when you make a promise, keep it.How To Make It Work For You If you cant keep a promise, explain why you cant. You may need to make a new promise to make it up. Be sure to keep this new promise no matter what This also means that you show up on time and respond quickly to emails and phone calls.3. Learn to Communicate In A Clear MannerI once had a teamberater who seemed to change his mind every week about the squads strategy on reporting contacts with foreign spies. Whether he actually did change his mind or not, his lack of ability to communicate his thoughts undermined our trust in him. His lack of ability to communicate in a clear and consistent manner caused many failed relationships with the agents on his squad. How To Make It Work For You Clear and constructive communication encourages honest conversations. It also means theyre willing to admit their mistakes and communicate them to those who both rely upon and trust them. It is an constructive reaction that shows genuine interest in the good of all. A good communicator will also ask for more details to show their interest and acknowledge the experiences or feelings of the other person. They will be consistent in their response and the message they send to others.4. Commit To The RelationshipAuthentic conversations are built when people are committed to grow and deepen the relationship, not just to maintain the status quo. If the relationship is the central consideration, mutual commitments are essential to avoid concerns about manipulation or control in the conversation. How To Make It Work For YouSpeak to the othe r persons interests and priorities. Validate them and their choices. Dont judge their behavior, actions, or choices. It means you will need to invest the time it takes to be a true friend who is concerned about their well-being.5. Stop Being A Prick Its Not All About YouThis should be obvious, but the ego is a wild beast that needs to be tamed on a regular basis. Your time with the other person really does need to be about the other person. Trustworthiness can be undermined by vanity and ego when the conversation no longer focuses on the person in front of you.Research tells us that we are most happy when we have positive social interactions and relationships. Our brain rewards us when we are able to share our views, desires, and goals with others. The simplest way to persuade others that you are trustworthy is make it all about them. And mean it.How To Make It Work For You Dont let your ego override your mouth and good intentions. Dont talk about yourself. Do spend time with follow -up questions from your last meeting with them. When you make every single statement about the other person and not about yourself, it becomes very powerful. It builds trust because it conveys two simple messages 1) they are important, and 2) you care about them. It shapes everything else from that point forward. This post was originally published on LaRaeQuy.com.

Video Interview 6 Things You Might Not Think of But Should

Video Interview 6 Things You Might Not Think of But ShouldVideo Interview 6 Things You Might Not Think of But ShouldFor a lot of us, job vorstellungsgesprchs can be nerve-wracking and stressful. They can also be costly, what with having to pay for commuting costs (i.e., gas, tolls, public transportation, parking, etc.). And then theres your interview outfit- since your potential boss is going to be seeing you for the first time, you might want to make a positive impression with a knock-em-dead outfit and fancy briefcase or bag. What about doing a video interview, though? When youre looking for a remote job, the job interview process might seem a whole lot easier. You dont have to worry about shelling out money to get there and back, or offering a handshake with clammy hands. Heres the thing, though. A video interview is leid as easy as it might seem. Here are six things you might never think of when doing a video interview, butshould.1. Cover up your tattoos.Whether youre sleeved or sp ort a single tat, you absolutely, positively should cover it up during your job interview. While you might think that a potential employer wont spot the little angel on your wrist, he probably will- and might think there are more tats where that came from. Dont give a potential employer the chance to cast a negative (and incorrect) impression of you, and cover up all of your tattoos accordingly.2. Close the windows.Sure, you like to feel the breeze wafting through your home office while you job search, but its a good idea to keep the windows closed during a video interview. Why? Well, if youre living in the city, theres a good chance that horns will be honking just at the moment when the hiring manager says something critical- and you cant hear it. Or if you live out in the sticks, chances are the FedEx truck will plow down your driveway just as you get into the nitty gritty of the job interview, setting off your dogs and causing them to bark and howl. Which brings us to3. Put away your pets. Although you love it when Sam your pitbull snuggles by you while you go through job postings, its smart to move him away from where youll be conducting the video interview. You never know what could set him off and make him bark, whimper, or howl, and that can be construed as unprofessional (after all, you wouldnt bring him to an in-office job interview, right?). So even if its hard to separate yourself from your four-legged sweetie, do it during the video interview.4. Clean up your space. In its current condition, you would say that your office sports a messy chic look. But to a hiring manager, all hell see in the background is piles of paper and half-opened filing cabinets, not the fabulous vintage bookends you bought online. Unfortunately, some managers might assume that your home office environment is representative of your work style, and if its sloppy, they might think the work youll produce for them will be poorly executed, too. So before your interview, take the ti me to go through your office and remove everything that isnt necessary. Purge old papers (or scan the important ones), remove all clutter, and make it look as clean and professional as possible.5. Consider what youre eating.Of course, you know that its not the best idea to have a chili cheese hot dog (with extra onions) right before an in-person interview. But if you think it doesnt matter what you eat before a video interview, think again. No doubt youll be excited/nervous before your job interview, and eating something that can produce extra, well, bubbles into your system might need to be rethought. Eat something at least half an hour before your interview so that you will feel satiated and your brain can benefit from the nutrients. Lean proteins and whole grains are a good way to go- and save the double stuffed bean burrito for aprs interview. You can even drink coffee while doing a video interview- just dont overdo it or youll wind up a jittery job seeker6. Get completely dress ed. You have a video interview with a company you really want to work for. You prepped your home office, but figure since youre going to be seated for the entire interview that you only need to get dressed from the waist up- and leave your PJ bottoms and fluffy slippers on so youll feel comfortable. This should go without saying, but you should always get completely dressed for a video interview. You never know if the hiring manager will ask you for some sort of documentation that is sitting on top of a cabinet across the room- and requires you to get up right then and there. So even if your suit is feeling a little tight from your nerves (or those last 20 pounds you need to lose as part of your New Years resolution), be dressed to impress from head to toe for your video interview.Although video interviews might seem easier to do, they actually require the same (if not more) prep and careful consideration. So put the tips above into practice before doing a video interview, and youll surely ace itReaders, are you prepared for doing a video interview? Have you ever not done one of these tips- and regretted it later? Let us know in the comments below

Identify the social media and networking sites that cater to people in your industry, and that attract people with the skills you need and participate. Each has its own protocol, which you can learn, to source great candidates online. Post jobs in the classified section of your local newspaper the paper likely has an online partner. New sites proliferate and, depending on your requirements, may help you meet your recruiting needs. Post jobs on commercial Job Boards such as Monster, CareerBuilder.com for general jobs, and CoolWorks.com for seasonal jobs. While their massiv e reach will bring you quantities of resumes from unqualified candidates, the occasional applicant gem exists as well. (I once found a well-qualified CFO through Monster.com.) Because these job boards are known to all job searchers and have a huge reach, they attract applications from most online job searchers.Their cited pricing is rarely the best price. Look for deals on the website or contact a sales agent. The sales agent will stay in touch with special offers for both posting jobs and search the job sites resume database. You can save hundreds of dollars over listed prices.More and more specialized job boards are entering the market. Depending on the qualifications required from the employees you seek, specialized job boards may be a better option for your online job posting than the big sisters in the online space.Specialized job sites, such as Dice.com, target key employee skill sets or areas of expertise such as technology that your company may need. You may decrease the spa m of hundreds of unqualified resumes in your inbox using more specialized job sites. Post jobs at professional association websites. The job postings are often low cost or free, especially for members. Your local chapters are almost all online and local candidates will view your job posting at the local association site before they will see it at the national website. Make spending decisions based on this recommendation. In the same vein, post jobs in industry-related or industry-serving online or email newsletters. The candidates you attract will generally have experience in your industry but may be national and look for relocation expenses paid. Depending upon the ability of your region to attract job searchers, this may or may not be a good strategy for you. Post jobs with your state Workforce Development organization, through your state department of labor. They appreciate employer job postings. Click on the map to select a state or choose from the list for the Department of Labo r/Employment Security Commission/Job Service Office in your state. In Michigan, employers can post jobs with the Michigan Talent Bank through Michigan Works. Youll find multiple options for both posting jobs online and recruiting candidates.Post jobs and job descriptions in emailed messages to business associates and colleagues. Seek candidates for your jobs. Referrals from people you know are usually good candidates because someone you know is vouching for them. Many employers maintain customized lists of personal and professional contacts, and when they have a job available for which they seek referrals, they contact their mailing list members. Looking to the Future Recruiting and Job Posting Online Options for online job posting and recruiting change daily. Just researching and staying on top of employer options during the past five years has been a daunting task as the online recruiting world changes daily. I expect that online recruiting options will continue to multiply as opportunities to match employers with superior candidates are a never-ending quest.

New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy

New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyYou get all kinds of happiness advice on the internet from people who dont know what theyre talking about. Dont trust them.Actually, dont trust me eitzu sich. Trust neuroscientists. They study that gray blob in your head all day and have learned a lot about what truly willmake you happy.UCLA neuroscience researcher alexanderplatz korbschlger has some insights that can create an upward spiral of happiness in your life. Heres what you and Ican learn from the people who really have answersFollow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and mora1) The Most Important Question To Ask When You Feel DownSometimes it doesnt feel like your brain wants you to be happy. You may feelguilty or shameful. Why?Believe it or not, guilt and shameactivate the brains reward center.Via The Upward SpiralDespi te their differences, pride, shame, and guilt all activate similar neural circuits, including the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, amygdala, insula, and the nucleus accumbens. Interestingly, pride is the most powerful of unterstellung emotions at triggering activity in these regions - except in the nucleus accumbens, where guilt and shame win out. This explains why it can be so appealing to heap guilt and shame on ourselves - theyre activating the brains reward center. And youworry a lot too. Why? In the short term, worrying makes your brain feel a little better - at least youre doing something about your problems.Via The Upward SpiralIn fact, worrying can help calm the limbic ordnungsprinzip by increasing activity in the medial prefrontal cortexand decreasing activity in the amygdala. That might seem counterintuitive, but it just goes to show that if youre feeling anxiety, doing something about it - even worrying - is better than doing nothing. But guilt, shame and worry are horri ble long-term solutions. So what do neuroscientists say you should do? Ask yourself this questionWhat am I grateful for?Yeah, gratitude is awesome but does it really affect your brain at the biological level? Yup.You know what the antidepressant Wellbutrin does? Boosts the neurotransmitter dopamine. So does gratitude.Via The Upward SpiralThe benefits of gratitude start with the dopamine system, because feeling grateful activates the brain stem region that produces dopamine. Additionally, gratitude toward others increases activity in social dopamine circuits, which makes social interactions mora enjoyableKnow what Prozac does? Boosts the neurotransmitter serotonin. So does gratitude.Via The Upward SpiralOne powerful effect of gratitude is that it can boost serotonin. Trying to think of things you are grateful for forces you to focus on the positive aspects of your life. This simple act increases serotonin production in the anterior cingulate cortex.I know, sometimes life lands a rea lly mean punch in the gut and it feels like theres nothing to begrateful for. Guess what?Doesnt matter. You dont have to find anything. Its the searchingthat counts.Via The Upward SpiralIts not finding gratitude that matters most its remembering to look in the first place. Remembering to be grateful is a form of emotional intelligence. One study found that it actually affected neuron density in both the ventromedial and zur seite hin gelegen prefrontal cortex. These density changes suggest that as emotional intelligence increases, the neurons in these areas become mora efficient. With higher emotional intelligence, it simply takes less effort to be grateful. And gratitude doesnt just make your brain happy - it can also create a positive feedback loop in your relationships. So express that gratitude to the people you care about.(For mora on how gratitude can make you happier and mora successful, click here.)But what happens when bad feelings completely overtake you? When youre really in the dumps and dont even know how to deal with it? Theres an easy answer2) Label Negative FeelingsYou feel awful. Okay, give that awfulness a name. Sad? Anxious? Angry?Boom. Its that simple. Sound stupid? Your noggin disagrees.Via The Upward Spiralin one fMRI study, appropriately titled Putting Feelings into Words participants viewed pictures of people with emotional facial expressions. Predictably, each participants amygdala activated to the emotions in the picture. But when they were asked to name the emotion, the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex activated and reduced the emotional amygdala reactivity. In other words, consciously recognizing the emotions reduced their impact.Suppressing emotions doesnt work and canbackfire on you.Via Your Brain at Work Strategies for Overcoming Distraction, Regaining Focus, and Working Smarter All Day LongGross found that people who tried to suppress a negative emotional experience failed to do so. While they thought they looked fine outwardly, inwardly their limbic system was just as aroused as without suppression, and in some cases, even mora aroused. Kevin Ochsner, at Columbia, repeated these findings using an fMRI. Trying not to feel something doesnt work, and in some cases even backfires. But labeling, on the other hand, makes a big difference.Via Your Brain at Work Strategies for Overcoming Distraction, Regaining Focus, and Working Smarter All Day LongTo reduce arousal, you need to use just a few words to describe an emotion, and ideally use symbolic language, which means using indirect metaphors, metrics, and simplifications of your experience. This requires you to activate your prefrontal cortex, which reduces the arousal in the limbic system. Heres the bottom line describe an emotion in just a word or two, and it helps reduce the emotion.Ancient methods were way ahead of us on this one.Meditationhas employed this for centuries. kennzeichnung is a fundamentaltool ofmindfulness. In fact, labeling affects the brain so p owerfully it works with other people too.Labeling emotions is one of the primary tools used by FBI hostage negotiators.(To learn more of the secrets of FBI hostage negotiators, click here.)Okay, hopefully youre not reading this and labeling your current emotional state as Bored. Maybe youre not feeling awful but you probably have thingsgoing on in your life that are causing you some stress. Heres a simple way to beat them3) Make That DecisionEver make a decision and then your brain finally feels at rest? Thats no random occurrence.Brain scienceshows that making decisions reduces worry and anxiety - as well as helping yousolve problems.Via The Upward SpiralMaking decisions includes creating intentions and setting goals - all three are part of the saatkorn neural circuitry and engage the prefrontal cortex in a positive way, reducing worry and anxiety. Making decisions also helps overcome striatum activity, which usually pulls you toward negative impulses and routines. Finally, makin g decisions changes your perception of the world - finding solutions to your problems and calming the limbic system. But deciding can behard. I agree. So what kind of decisions should you make? Neuroscience has an answerMake a good enough decision. Dont sweat making the absolute 100% best decision. We all know being a perfectionist can be stressful. And brain studies back this up.Trying to be perfect overwhelms your brain with emotions and makes you feel out of control.Via The Upward SpiralTrying for the best, instead of good enough, brings too much emotional ventromedial prefrontal activity into the decision-making process. In contrast, recognizing that good enough is good enough activates more dorsolateral prefrontal areas, which helps you feel more in controlAs Swarthmore professor Barry Schwartz said in my interview with him Good enough is almost always good enough. So when you make a decision, your brain feels you have control. And, as Ive talked about before, a feeling of contro l reduces stress. But heres whats really fascinating Deciding also boosts pleasure.Via The Upward SpiralActively choosing caused changes in attention circuits and in how the participants felt about the action, and it increased rewarding dopamine activity.Want proof? No problem. Lets talk about cocaine. You give 2 rats injections of cocaine. proposition A had to pull a lever first. Rat B didnt have to do anything. Any difference? Yup rat A gets a bigger boost of dopamine.Via The Upward SpiralSo they both got the saatkorn injections of cocaine at the same time, but rat A had to actively press the lever, and rat B didnt have to do anything. And you guessed it - rat A released more dopamine in its nucleus accumbens. So whats the lesson here? Next time you buy cocaine whoops, wrong lesson. Point is, when you make a decisionon a goal and then achieve it, you feel better than when good stuff just happens by chance. And this answers the eternalmystery of why dragging your butt to the gym can be so hard.If you go because you feel you have to or you should, well, its not really a voluntary decision. Your brain doesnt get the pleasure boost. It just feels stress. And thats no way to build a good exercise habit.Via The Upward SpiralInterestingly, if they are forced to exercise, they dont get the same benefits, because without choice, the exercise itself is a source of stress. So make more decisions. Neuroscience researcher Alex Korb sums it up nicelyWe dont just choose the things we like we also like the things we choose.(To learn whatneuroscientists say is the best way to use caffeine, click here.)Okay, youre being grateful, labeling negative emotions and making more decisions. Great. But this is feeling kinda lonely for a happiness prescription. Lets get some other people in here.Whats something you can do with others that neuroscience says is a path to mucho happiness? And something thats stupidly simple so you dont get lazy and skip it? Brain docs have an answerfor you4) Touch PeopleNo, not indiscriminately that can get you in a lot of trouble. But we need to feel love and acceptance from others. When we dont its painful. And I dont mean awkward or disappointing. I mean actuallypainful.Neuroscientists did a study where people played a tanzfest-tossing video game. The other players tossed the ball to you and you tossed it back to them. Actually, there were no other players that was all done by the computer program. But the subjects were told the characters were controlled by real people. So what happened when the other players stopped playing nice and didnt share the ball?Subjects brains responded the same way as if they experienced physical pain. Rejection doesnt just hurt like a broken heart your brain feelsit like a broken leg.Via The Upward SpiralIn fact, as demonstrated in an fMRI experiment, social exclusion activates the same circuitry as physical pain at one point they stopped sharing, only throwing back and forth to each other, ignoring the p articipant. This small change was enough to elicit feelings of social exclusion, and it activated the anterior cingulate and insula, just like physical pain would.Relationships are very important toyour brains feeling of happiness.Want to take that to the next level? Touch people.Via The Upward SpiralOne of the primary ways to release oxytocin is through winzigkeiting. Obviously, its not always appropriate to touch most people, but small touches like handshakes and pats on the back are usually okay. For people youre close with, make more of an effort to touch more often.Touching is incredibly powerful. We just dont give it enough credit. It makes you more persuasive, increases team performance, improves your flirting heck, it even boostsmath skills.Touching someone you love actually reduces pain. In fact, when studies were done on married couples, the stronger the marriage, the more powerful the effect.Via The Upward SpiralIn addition, holding hands with someone can help comfort you and your brain through painful situations. One fMRI study scanned married women as they were warned that they were about to get a small electric shock. While anticipating the painful shocks, the brain showed a predictable pattern of response in pain and worrying circuits, with activation in the insula, anterior cingulate, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. During a separate scan, the women either held their husbands hands or the hand of the experimenter. When a subject held her husbands hand, the threat of shock had a smaller effect. The brain showed reduced activation in both the anterior cingulate cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex- that is, less activity in the pain and worrying circuits. In addition, the stronger the marriage, the lower the discomfort-related insula activity. So hug someone today. And do not accept little, quick hugs. No, no, no. Tell them your neuroscientist recommended long hugs.Via The Upward SpiralA hug, especially a long one, releases a neurotransmi tter and hormone oxytocin, which reduces the reactivity of the amygdala.Research shows getting five hugs a day for four weeks increases happiness big time.Dont have anyoneto hug right now? No? (Im sorry to hear that. I would give you a hug right now if I could.) But theres an answer neuroscience says you should go get a massage.Via The Upward SpiralThe results are fairly clear that massage boosts your serotonin by as much as 30 percent. Massage also decreases stress hormones and raises dopamine levels, which helps you create new good habitsMassage reduces pain because the oxytocin system activates painkilling endorphins. Massage also improves sleep and reduces fatigue by increasing serotonin and dopamine and decreasing the stress hormone cortisol. So spend time with other people and give some hugs. Sorry, texting is not enough. When you put people in a stressful situation and then let them visit loved ones or talk to them on the phone, they felt better. What about whenthey just texted ? Their bodies responded the same as if they had no support at all.Via The Upward Spiralthe text-message group had cortisol and oxytocin levels similar to the no-contact group.Authors note I totally approve oftexting if you make a hug appointment.(To learn what neuroscience says is the best way to get smarter and happier, click here.)Okay, I dont want to strain your brain with too much info. Dont trust them.Actually, dont trust me either. Trust neuroscientists. They study that gray blob in your head all day and have learned a lot about what truly willmake you happy.UCLA neuroscience researcher Alex Korb has some insights that can create an upward spiral of happiness in your life. Heres what you and Ican learn from the people who really have answersFollow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more1) The Most Important Question To Ask When You Feel DownSometimes it doesnt feel like your brain wants you to be happy. You may feelguilty or shameful. Why?Believe it or not, guilt and shameact ivate the brains reward center.Via The Upward SpiralDespite their differences, pride, shame, and guilt all activate similar neural circuits, including the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, amygdala, insula, and the nucleus accumbens. Interestingly, pride is the most powerful of these emotions at triggering activity in these regions - except in the nucleus accumbens, where guilt and shame win out. This explains why it can be so appealing to heap guilt and shame on ourselves - theyre activating the brains reward center. And youworry a lot too. Why? In the short term, worrying makes your brain feel a little better - at least youre doing something about your problems.Via The Upward SpiralIn fact, worrying can help calm the limbic system by increasing activity in the medial prefrontal cortexand decreasing activity in the amygdala. That might seem counterintuitive, but it just goes to show that if youre feeling anxiety, doing something about it - even worrying - is better than doing noth ing.But guilt, shame and worry are horrible long-term solutions. Additionally, gratitude toward others increases activity in social dopamine circuits, which makes social interactions more enjoyableKnow what Prozac does? Boosts the neurotransmitter serotonin. So does gratitude.Via The Upward SpiralOne powerful effect of gratitude is that it can boost serotonin. Trying to think of things you are grateful for forces you to focus on the positive aspects of your life. This simple act increases serotonin production in the anterior cingulate co rtex.I know, sometimes life lands a really mean punch in the gut and it feels like theres nothing to begrateful for. Guess what?Doesnt matter. You dont have to find anything. Its the searchingthat counts.Via The Upward SpiralIts not finding gratitude that matters most its remembering to look in the first place. Remembering to be grateful is a form of emotional intelligence. One study found that it actually affected neuron density in both the ventromedial and lateral prefrontal cortex. These density changes suggest that as emotional intelligence increases, the neurons in these areas become more efficient. With higher emotional intelligence, it simply takes less effort to be grateful. And gratitude doesnt just make your brain happy - it can also create a positive feedback loop in your relationships. So express that gratitude to the people you care about.(For more on how gratitude can make you happier and more successful, click here.)But what happens when bad feelings completely overta ke you? While they thought the y looked fine outwardly, inwardly their limbic system was just as aroused as without suppression, and in some cases, even more aroused. Labeling is a fundamentaltool ofmindfulness. In fact, labeling af fects the brain so powerfully it works with other people too.Labeling emotions is one of the primary tools used by FBI hostage negotiators.(To learn more of the secrets of FBI hostage negotiators, click here.)Okay, hopefully youre not reading this and labeling your current emotional state as Bored. Maybe youre not feeling awful but you probably have thingsgoing on in your life that are causing you some stress. Heres a simple way to beat them3) Make That DecisionEver make a decision and then your brain finally feels at rest? Thats no random occurrence.Brain scienceshows that making decisions reduces worry and anxiety - as well as helping yousolve problems.Via The Upward SpiralMaking decisions includes creating intentions and setting goals - all three are part of the same neural circuitry and engage the prefrontal cortex in a positive way, reducing worry and anxiety. Making decisions also helps overcome striatum activity, which usually pulls you toward negative impulses and routines . Finally, making decisions changes your perception of the world - finding solutions to your problems and calming the limbic system. And, as Ive talked about before, a f eeling of control reduces stress. Rat A had to pull a lever first. Rat B didnt have to do anything. Any difference? Yup rat A gets a bigger boost of dopamine.Via The Upward SpiralSo they both got the same injections of cocaine at the same time, but rat A had to actively press the lever, and rat B didnt have to do anything. Brain docs have an answerfor y ou4) Touch PeopleNo, not indiscriminately that can get you in a lot of trouble. But we need to feel love and acceptance from others. When we dont its painful. 10 Reasons To Hire Gen Y

10 Reasons To Hire richtung Y 10 Reasons To Hire Gen YPosted October 13, 2011, by Andrea Riddell Disloyal, arrogant, selfish, overindulgent, high-maintenance, frivolous, image-driven, impatient, over-confident and spoilt. Generation Y has been called it all. And now the generation that everyone thought would never grow up is starting to make up the bulk of the workforce and theyre set for world domination. Raised by technology with the Internet as their babysitter, Gen Y, who make up one fifth of the Australian population, are proving their worth particularly in the workplace. Despite being labelled as having short attention spans and being ill prepared for the real world, employers are starting to see the benefits of hiring Gen Y. Here are 10 reasons why you should as well. 1. They work to live While the older generations usually chant the chained-to-your-desk mantra, Generation Y is pushing to reclaim their worklife balance. While their career is highly important to them, Gen Yer s believe that working hard and effectively does not equate to working long hours. They have no trouble blurring the lines between work and their personal life and this means they are strong advocates of flexible hours and working from home. And lets be perfectly honest, who would say no to a better balance and working smarter? 2. They put the I in team In general day-to-day operations, Gen Yers are improving the workplace through an emphasis on networking and teamwork. Workplace culture and colleagues are very important to Gen Y and this is reflected in their preference for fewer meetings and more team-oriented and collaborative work. They are wary of office gossip and instead prefer to build strong relationships with everyone. To serve this need for networking, they have brought with them the adoption of internal social networks, including instant messaging, video and phone conferencing as new methods of communication, increasing the amount of communication while decreasing the time it takes. 3. They are tech-savvy Fluent in the language of social media and technology, Gen Yers are the harbingers of change in the office. Workplaces have now adopted social media and technology to not only conduct business in a more effective manner but also to change the way they market their brand and their business. They are quick adopters of new technology and prove a great asset for businesses trying to push the cyber-boundaries. Indeed, this generation understands more than any other the ability of social media and technology to be a powerful tool in day-to-day business, from sourcing information to creating a following. With their adaptable nature and willingness to try anything once, Gen Yers are at the forefront of innovation, turning traditional business operations on their head. 4. They have different work expectations Generation Y are entering the workforce with higher expectations than

A former corporate executive on the art of self-care

A former corporate executive on the art of self-careA former corporate executive on the art of self-careJoanna Andreaeis a certified Holistic Health Coach, a Guided Meditation teacherbei, and the founder and CEO ofWandering Wellness. After leaving her high-stress, corporate job, she began focusing her career on her true passion - personal wellness and self-care.Its changed literally everything, says Andreae about hercareer switch. These days, instead of having to push and struggle towards outer goals and achievements, I focus initially on what I need in mind, body, and spirit, and through that flipped line of thought, Im able to magnetize much more of what I want towards me. Its such a beautiful and profound shift and, I think its only believed once its experienced. We sat down with Andreae to learn more about her thoughts on wellness and the importance of self-care for professionals. Heres what she had to sayWhy joga and meditation? Why notlage sohonigweinhing else to take care of o ur inner selves? Its a busy persons dream. When we combine yoga and meditation- and especially Kundalini yoga, my favorite personal practice- were literally using lessons that have been passed down for thousands of years about how to have a deeper experience of truth and freedom in our bodies. We are spiritual beings having a human experience, not the other way around. I think yoga and meditation are the best ways to remember that fact.Additionally, theyre much better for the nervous system. I love a good, sweatyworkouttoo and will try a spin class or go for a run when Im really craving it, but in our busy modern lives our systems are so fritzed and fried already that actually, more often than not, we need practices that cool us down instead of ramp us up.What type of clients do you work with?I work with people who are struggling to feel worthy of taking care of themselves, worthy of their dreams, and who want to feel empowered when it comes to taking care of their lives. I work with people who want to experience more joy and more energy in their daily life and who have forgotten the vibrant excitement it is to be alive on the planet today. And I feel so honored to dothis workI work with clients in person in Washington, but also digitally all over the world. Its amazing to help people connect the dots when it comes to healing. I believe its possible to live a life of so much fullness and happiness and depth, and when that clicks for people, there is nothing better. What have you learned through working with so many different people? That everyone wants to be happy. That everyone wants to feel good in their bodies. And that truly were so much more connected and similar than we think. It makes me sad to think were somehow inculcated with the information that were less-than at some point in life, but its so inspiring to teach practices and tactics to turn things around. Its never, ever too late.Youvetraveled all overand worked with people from all over the world. Are professionals in DC especiallystressed?Hmm, yes. And no, comparatively. I was just in NYC for some training and I met up with an old friend who used to live in Washington and now lives in the Big Apple. And its rough Shes under so much pressure and stress these days. There is so much fear of missing out - with career, with relationships, with friendships, even with restaurants. I think city life leads to a much more pressurized experience. Because of that pressure, I firmly believe that we cant afford NOT to take care of ourselves.Stressis an epidemic for DCers and other city dwellers and is all the more reason to be especially careful, loving and disciplined in that process. What are some signs that someone is not focusing on self-care?Everyone has their little tell. Whether its getting sick, or feeling anxious, or not sleeping well, our bodies are constantly trying to tell us whats going on through feelings and emotions. And instead of pushing them down, if we decide to listen and care about their direction, we can course-correct before we go too far down the path of self-neglect.Nevertheless, I believe its never too late to start taking better care of yourself. Truly never. I have clients age 24 all the way to age 65, and some are just learning what it means to slow down and be kinder to themselves through self-care. Its always possible to do that.Whats one tip you can share with readers to start taking better care of themselves right this minute?Breathwork. There are few things more powerful than starting to control and utilize your breath. Most of us breathe way too shallowly, all in the upper chest and never in the belly. This article first appeared onCapitolStandard.

How to Tell Your Boss You Want to Transfer

How to Tell Your Boss You Want to TransferHow to Tell Your Boss You Want to TransferIf you are working in a very large company with many departments, often in the same building, chances are you will find out about opportunities to transfer. Transferring to a new department comes with some challenges, especially if your anfhrer is one of your biggest fans and would hate to see you leave.Even worse, what if your anfhrer knows, competes with, and does not like your new profil boss? Now, you were thrown into the middle of something you did not expect. If that is the case (or not), there are ways you can tell your boss you want to transfer.Ask your potential boss to speak with you after workYour current boss should not be asked to share your time with a boss from another department. Meetings are tough to schedule and using company timeto plan your next career move will come across as insulting. It will probably hurt your chances of growing within the company, too.Take the time to set up a meeting after work to discuss the transfer. The environment will feel less rushed and more laid back. This way neither of you has to deal with questions about why you were in another department for a meeting and who you spoke with. You can also find out just how serious an opportunity this transfer will be. Find out if it is a lateral move or a step up in your career.Be honest with your concerns about transferringThis is an unassuming way of letting your potential boss you are worth more salary. Talk with your potential boss about the challenges of transferring departments. Get all the information about the new job and explain how your current skills will be of value.Let the boss know that you are an important member of your group. Bring up the name of your boss and talk about what you are working on. Explain your value to your boss. If necessary, explain who the boss is and how he/she will possibly react to the news.Above all, let the potential boss know you are interested. Explain that your information is offered to avoid any unnecessary conflict in the company. Career growth, company growth, and business relationships are all important to you.Get your story down and let the boss knowIt is time. You have to let the boss know you are interested in transferring to another team. The last thing you want to do is cause problems for anyone. When letting the boss know it is important to reassure him/her that it has nothing to do with your opinions of the boss. Tell the boss why this is a new challenge you feel will help with your career growth. Reassure your boss that this decision was not easy and you will work very hard until your very last day in the department. Let the boss know this is because your relationship with your boss is important.Depending on what you find out about your boss relationship with the new boss, offer up information on where you will be transferring to. If you know your new and old bosses do not get along, try to avoid revealing that inform ation.Important final noteObviously, make sure you have a job to go to before you tell anyone you are thinking of transferring. Also, make sure you will be hired for it.The worst thing that can happen is finding out you have no job to transfer to, and now your current boss believes you want to leave the team. It will affect your ability to grow in that team and may sour your business relationship with your boss.

5 Tactics for Starting a Conversation with a Stranger

5 Tactics for Starting a Conversation with a Stranger5 Tactics for Starting a Conversation with a StrangerThere is a hierarchy of cringe-worthy activities and high on the list is starting a conversation for networking. If you peel back networking, there are few things worse for many people (like my fellow socially reluctant) than approaching and speaking with a stranger. The problem you face is the fact that you have little or no frame of reference with this other person. Where do you start a conversation? Even if you can muster up the courage to go near the stranger, it makes you feel like a deer in the headlights.Do you run away as fast as possible or hope for the fire alarm to goes off?I have found that rather than stopping in your tracks, its good to have tactics for starting a conversation. With a bit of planning, you can seriously reduce the fear and loathing of networking.Tactic 1. What do you have in common RIGHT NOW?There is something you do have in common with this stranger and that is whatever the event is you are attending. If it is a party you were invited to, you have that person in common. If it is a group associated with a profession or interest, you have the focus of the group as a place to start.Possible openersHow do you and Jane know each other? How long have you been part of the project management group? What is your profession that brings you to this group?Tactic 2. Look for a point of entry.Point of entry is my little term for a conversation starter. It could be something the person is snacking on, all the way to an article of clothing. It may not become the topic for a full-blown 15-minute conversation, but its a place to start. Your questions will have to fill in the rest of the conversation.Possible openersI binnensee youre munching on the egg rolls, do you recommend them?I noticed your lapel pin, what is the pin associated with?Tactic 3. Ask for an introduction. An often over-looked tactic is to ask someone like the event organizer or a p erson you do know to introduce you to someone you dont know. Usually this person will have some knowledge about the person they are introducing you to and will mention the insight during the introduction. Pay attention as this can help you launch your conversation.Tactic 4. Be transparent. So often, we think we have to be the perfect, glossy version of a human when we meet someone new. Its really ok to admit you are there to get acquainted with new people and would like to have a chat with them. People love people who are open and friendly. Go ahead and admit you have no cleaver way of knowing where to start the conversation and introduce yourself.Possible openersIm new to this group and really dont know anyone. Is it ok for me to join you and your friends? (Ive done this a number of times and people are remarkably hospitable.)Hi, I dont think you and I have met before. Im Dorothy and you are? (Response) What brings you here today?Tactic 5. The classic. We are all very accustomed to t he question What kind of work do you do? Dont be afraid to introduce yourself and ask that classic question. Once we know the kind of work someone does, it helps frame the next part of the conversation. One of the things you rarely hear discussed when it comes to networking is the idea of preparing for it. Im a big advocate of doing just that. Not all of us are big social butterflies who can easily come into a schauplatz and begin a gabfest with anyone they encounter. I have discovered that you can think through various parts of the process and develop good tactics to help you get the most out of the next event. Isnt that worth the cringe reduction?Bottom-line I want to help you accelerate your career- to achieve what you want by connecting you with free instant access to my 4 Building Blocks to Relationships ebook- the backbone to your networking success and fantastic work relationships.Readers, is starting a conversation easy or challenging for you?
